Urban vision of the center of Plunge

How to create a vibrant Plunge center and attract people to the old town and green squares?

Located in the historical part of the city, the 9.5-hectare area lacks the feeling of the city: there are many empty plots, worthless buildings, and there is nothing to do in the parks. The urban vision offers solutions for attracting new residents and visitors to the center of Plunge by transforming the city's spaces.

The project area has an interesting history. Before the war, many Jews lived here, there were two synagogues, a Jewish bath, and many streams flowed. One of them, the Paplunga stream, from which the name of the city of Plunge derives, was canalized and turned into the Palankės pond.

In the urban vision, it is proposed to restore the structure of the urban blocks. New development is proposed: small apartment buildings and row houses are being formed, commercial functions are planned on the ground floors, residential row-houses have terraces and views of the pond closer to the water. The green character of the project area is maintained, but more attractions are planned in the parks, which would encourage the citizens to come, rest, and have fun: a green community square with an attraction-pavilion around the pump station, wooden urban embankments with a stepped terrace and a path - footbridge, and further on - a natural, green park around the water with paths, swings, play and recreation areas. Meanwhile, in the square near the police station, it is proposed to open a canalized stream and use the water as the main element of the park.

The vision also envisages improving the movement of pedestrians and cyclists: bicycle paths and new pedestrian links will appear, and the connection between the center of Plunge and the southern districts will be improved. It is proposed to add street parking, plant trees, and improve pedestrian sidewalks on Sinagogų Street.

Citizens community was involved in the preparation of the project, presentations, discussions, and a survey were held. This vision is the beginning of the transformation of the territory. Next steps - it is planned to prepare a land use plan of the territory, form plots, then prepare technical projects. Individual parts of the territory and plots will be able to be implemented in stages.
